The number of partners to complete a professional development needs assessment.

Outcome

We have convened partners for this project and started the planning process. Our next step is to complete a needs assessment by our partners to ensure that our plans align with the needs of the community.

Notes

As a first step toward increasing the awareness and quantity of professional development opportunities for youth workers in the field, NOKP is working in collaboration with YouthShift to create a Professional Development & Community Events Calendar to more easily share opportunities from 300+ local organizations. This includes networking opportunities, community events, workshops, panels and discussions. View the calendar at nokp.org/calendar.

Open description NOLA Go! Youth Smartcard

NOLA Go! will provide a single access point for thousands of New Orleans low-income youth ages 14-18 to connect with a citywide network of public transportation and a coordinated system of youth services, ranging from the New Orleans Public Library, to recreation centers, to after school programs.

Number of student participants in the pilot program

Outcome

Launch of a 5-month pilot program with 60 youth participants ages 14-18.

Notes

NOLA Go! was selected as 1 of 30 ventures to participate in the Fall 2015 Propeller Impact Accelerator Program. Between September and December 2015, NOKP will receive expert advice, mentorship, and guidance on the implementation of a NOLA Go! pilot program to launch in January 2016. In partnership with schools, community organizations, and RTA, the NOLA Go! pilot will provide 50 youth participants ages 14-18 free access to the city's public transportation system, plus support in identifying and navigating a landscape of community programs, resources, and opportunities.

NOLA Go! won the top place prize at Propeller's PitchNOLA: Education competition on November 4th!

Open description Connect 2 Educate Resources Directory

Produce and distribute a “one-stop-shop” directory of children’s services in the Greater New Orleans Area.

Parents engaged during focus group to gather feedback and input for improving future editions of the directory.

Outcome

Connect 2 Educate Resources Directory 2015 is completed. The focus of the project is now on data collection in order to improve the quality and access of future editions of the directory. Key partners are currently engaging parents in a focus group to gather data.

Notes

The Connect 2 Educate Resources Directory 2015 is now completed. This is free and available to the public at all New Orleans Public Library branches. It is also available on our website at nokp.org as a digital PDF.

The C2E Team is currently conducting data collection to gather feedback from various stakeholders to improve the next edition of Connect2Educate.

Open description Literacy Collaborative and Awareness Campaign

NOKP’s Early Childhood Working Group is engaging families, community-based programs and schools to establish a network of services to increase early childhood literacy, facilitate collaboration between early childhood service providers and inform parents of early childhood best practices.

Families attending the Read and Be Heard Early Literacy Collaborative during the Fall 2015 series of programming.

Outcome

Children in a cohort of 25 families increase reading skills to appropriate grade level based on school pre- and post-program reading test results.

Current Status:
Read and Be Heard Literacy Collaborative Fall 2015 session of programming runs Aug 27th to Dec 16th 2015.

Funding:
Awarded a grant from Target for program expansion in 2015-2016 school year.
