What matters most, for young adults to build a successful future, is a college degree. College graduates are 2x more likely to be employed and they earn almost two times more than high school graduates. They are more likely to be productive, participating members of society, being two times more likely to vote and almost five times likely to volunteer. And yet, today, 80.5% of low-income students DO NOT graduate from college.
The mission of College Track is to empower students from underserved communities to graduate from college. College Track recruits students from underserved communities and works continuously with them from the summer before 9th grade through college graduation. College Track in New Orleans is doing its best to help students not just meet grade level, but exceed it. We want our scholars to make it through high school and college graduation with strong extracurricular and academic skills. Under the leadership of Site Director Sherdren Burnside, we currently serve nearly 300 students in the Greater New Orleans Area.
Last year, College Track New Orleans served 273 students. In 2008, when College Track New Orleans began, the initial cohort of students was only 37. Since then, College Track has had 79 high school graduates and 85% of high school graduates enrolled in college.
