PRIME TIME FAMILY READING TIME® is an award-winning humanities family literacy program proven to positively impact both family reading behaviors and student academic achievement. The mission of PRIME TIME is to bond economically and educationally vulnerable families around the act of reading, thus creating the precondition for all future learning.
Programs are offered in schools, libraries and community venues once weekly for 6 or 8 weeks. During each 90-minute session a trained storyteller models reading aloud techniques by presenting carefully selected children’s books. A trained humanities scholar then guides participants in a discussion of the literature, incorporating the universal humanities themes found within, e.g., ethics, fairness, greed, etc. By modeling effective, open-ended questioning techniques with the families (the Socratic Method), the scholar promotes critical thinking, reasoning, and questioning skills. Barriers to participation are systematically eliminated with provisions of meals, transportation and pre-literacy activity for younger siblings.
